Helping Our Police Everywhere
For years the Broward County PBA felt constricted when it came to helping members with issues that were beyond the scope of the dues structure; in 1998 the Board of Directors took the lead from other PBA charters and chapters and formed a charitable giving organization to help members who are were in catastrophic duress: The HOPE Fund: Helping Our Police Everywhere.
In 2001 we began providing financial support to members in need. The main purpose of the Broward County PBA HOPE Fund is to help officers and their families during catastrophic times. Over the years the fund has grown through various outside donations and funds from the Broward County PBA. Through 2007, $93,298.61 has been distributed though the HOPE Fund.
In 2003 the Board of Directors voted to offer scholarships to our member's children from the HOPE Fund. The scholarship program is for members' children who are high school seniors and are planning to attend college in the fall. Candidates go though an application process and submit essays to compete for available scholarships. As many 25 seniors a year receive awards from The HOPE Fund. Through 2007, $25,150.00 in scholarships have been awarded to 105 future leaders.
The HOPE Fund is registered with the State of Florida and the Internal Revenue Service as a tax-exempt charitable organization in compliance with the code of 501C(3).
Mr. Tom O'Connell, owner of O'Connell's Bistro in Plantation, presented a check to the Broward County PBA HOPE Fund in the amount of $5,459.41 for the Benefit of BSO Deputy Maury Hernandez. The proceeds were generated by an on-going Fundraiser held Mr. O'Connell wherein he donated a portion of the proceeds from every individual who came into his restaurant to eat that mentioned that they were there for the Maury Hernandez Fund Raiser. Mr. O'Connell also orchestrated car wash which was held at O'Connell Bistro. The combined efforts resulted in the amount of $5,459.41. Thank you Mr. O'Connell
